2023 is already turning out to be an interesting year with January flying by. Alwyn and I were invited to the Dove Valley Swimming Club presentation evening held at Checkley village hall. How fantastic to hear of the achievements by the young swimmers. Dove Valley swimming club was the starting point for Olympian Adam Peaty and im sure that others who are members will go on to do just as well. The dedication of the swimmers their families, coaches and supporters is really second to none, so if you are interested in getting your involved please contact them via the Facebook page.
I am attending the Rotary Club for dinner on Tuesday evening; a world wide organisation which carries out charity work and im very much looking forward to attending.
This year will see the the coronation of King Charles the III. As part of the celebrations a group of friends have got together to hold a Coronation Ball at Uttoxeter Town Hall on Friday 5th of May, this will be an adults only dinner and dance. Tickets are available via myself, Debz Whiston, Mel McGinley, Rachel at the Nights Inn or Woodward’s. We are again being supported by donations of raffle prizes from the local business community who are very generous. Im looking forward to dressing up and sharing a fun night out with friends on this historic occasion so please come and join us.
I wish to inform readers that a Bleed Control kit is available in the defibrillator box located on the Town Hall. The kit was presented by the West Midlands Ambulance Service for which I would like to say thank you. Unfortunately it is a sad sign of the times in which we live that (a) knife crime and the carrying of such weapons is common place and (b) that the ambulance service is unable to meet the needs of the public, try as they might. We should all do our bit to stop knife crime within our communities that includes conversations with our children and all young people, every life lost in this way is an absolute tragedy.
So that everyone is made aware I wish to bring to your attention that on Saturday 28th January which is Makers Market, the next round of consultation events for the regeneration of The Maltings will held in Uttoxeter Town Hall. The event will start at 10 am and ESBC staff and Councillors will be present to discuss your views as will Town Councillors including myself. Please come and join in if you do not make your voice heard and fight for what you want then there is no cause to complain in the future. More publicity will follow so keep an eye out .
I heard an interesting story from history last week, I share it simply as a reminder that no matter how superior we may think we are it is best to be kind, supportive and caring of all people no matter their views, politics or background because if we fail in this regard more humble creatures maybe our undoing. In 1702 William III died of pneumonia which was a complication of falling from his horse and braking his collarbone. The horse was named Sorrel and rumour had it that the animal had been confiscated as a punishment from Sir John Fenwick, a Jacobite who had conspired against William the III. Sorrell appears to have stumbled in a moles burrow casting the king from his saddle. The toast amongst Jacobite’s was to ” the little gentleman in the black velvet waistcoat ” . Oddly this is how my family have always referred to moles; anyone else use this description.?
