Do you have any other comments you wish to make about Uttoxeter’s Markets?
  • The Maltings car parking (lack of spaces) is now becoming a big issue!!  If we cant park the car, how can we come to the market!!  As we live in the area there’s no bus close to us !!  Stop traffic in main street market days.
  • Make the rent £1.00 per foot frontage.  Ask traders to erect their own stalls and take away refuse etc with them.  This will help new traders.  Lower car parking charges.  This will encourage the public.
  • The rents of stalls need to be lower to encourage more people to take stalls to we would have more variety.
  • A monthly turn of charity run café.  No charge.  Tea/coffee helps bring in customers.
  • We need many more stalls with a variety of goods on display – similar to that we used to have on the cattle market.  Our relatives used to arrange their visits to us so they could visit that market – no longer though.
  • More variety of stalls, stalls should be relocated to length of High St.  Keep bollard in action for duration.
  • Advertising is very poor – even local papers do not have it in each week/month.  A special on some of the stall holders would be great.
  • The farmers/craft market needs to be advertised as a craft market. Customers were expecting foods stalls and there were none.  Crafts people were expecting the venue to be advertised for crafts.
  • The council has successfully killed all our markets by removing the cattle market.
  • The gentleman who was running the market was very helpful, made us feel at ease and definitely made us think of doing this market again!
  • I would have the stallholders pay a month in advance as many let you down on the day.  I would also like to say your caretaker is very helpful and works hard to make the market a success.
  • Needs to be better advertised/marketed before and during the event.  Consistency of message about the style of market it is representing and the opening hours.
  • The Saturday market is named as a Farmers Market.  Feedback from customers is generally disappointment from lack of ‘farming goods’.  Re-branding needed to attract the correct clientele.

  •  I let the markets down because I try to be self sufficient.
  • Really nothing here (Friday outdoor market) – markets should combine to 1 or 2 days only.  You should take example from Stone’s Farmers’ market – and please more advertising.  More stalls.  More advertising we are a tourist spot, we have a caravan site at Racecourse.
  • Gone downhill.  2 markets Wed and Sat with more variety.  Open cattle market again.
  • I pop in if I’m in town/off work.  Nice atmosphere.  Maybe music? Coffees? More stalls obviously improve market.
  • Need to encourage footfall – like other towns.  Free parking especially for elderly.
  • Traders need to be encouraged and rewarded for their loyalty.  Morale is low – maybe an article in the newsletter or Our Uttoxeter!!
  • Do with a few more stalls!
  • As a regular trader I would really like to see a good variety of local food produce and craft.  Some ‘exclusivity’ would be good.  A little ‘competition’ is okay but customers get put off by overload of one particular food/craft.  I am considering adding artisan bread to my stall.  Consider refreshments again please even if just drinks.  Consider joining together indoor and outdoor markets.
  • Need to bring different traders to attract customers.  Recently you allowed another clothing stall and of seven stallholders 3 were clothing which was ridiculous and caused conflict in returning of garments.
  • We are a ‘Market’ town and yet markets have diminished vastly.  We need to attract stallholders to town.  It was a mistake moving the Friday market!
  • I don’t visit the markets as I work full-time
  • The reason I don’t visit them is because there is so few stalls it’s not worth it

  • I am a person who doesn’t really like markets so I don’t really have anything positive to say, but having a mum who is a market lover she used to love the Friday market when it was up the Cattle Market

  • Although the Wednesday and Saturday outdoor markets are small the fish, bread, fruit and vegetables are a great alternative to supermarkets. They must be encouraged to keep coming to town. Any one off or annual events like the continental market should not take precedence. They are less important. The last continental market expensive and generally poor quality stuff
  • Have a charity run café to attract customers, for a nominal fee only (to cover electricity expenses only)

  • Uttoxeter should go back to having a live stock market. It’s in the perfect place – close to major routes. This would generate more people coming into Uttoxeter. As it is you can forget Uttoxeter Town Centre as it only has charity shops, empty parades. The markets are not enough to draw me in for a special journey
  • All the markets need to provide a greater number of good quality stalls selling a wide variety of goods. They need better and wider advertising and other services, like refreshments, to encourage customers to come again. The Council need to ensure a balance of what is sold and incentives for stallholders’ loyalty
  • Very poor compared to other local markets. I feel the town does little to encourage traders of allsorts. Two more shops closed on High Street! Embarrassing town. Would never bring out of area friends to shop. PS Carter Street starting to look like the high street should because rents/rates lower – lesson to be learned?
  • When the cattle market was here farmers wives came into town with their husbands etc, and the cattle market was another interest in the town, now that has gone so have other things
